Wing pulleys are specialized conveyor pulleys designed to operate efficiently in environments where material buildup, moisture, and contamination are common challenges. Unlike conventional drum pulleys, wing pulleys feature an open design with radial steel wings that support the conveyor belt while allowing loose material to fall away, preventing accumulation on the pulley surface.

Structure and Key Components

Central Shaft: Provides structural strength and transmits torque from the drive system. Typically manufactured from high-strength carbon steel to withstand heavy loads.
Wing Plates (Radial Wings): The defining feature of the pulley, these steel wings are arranged radially around the shaft. They create gaps that allow debris, mud, and sticky materials to pass through, delivering a self-cleaning effect.
End Discs / Hubs: Secure the wings to the shaft and ensure proper alignment and structural integrity during operation.
Bearings and Housing: Support smooth rotation and reduce friction, ensuring long-term operational stability.

Working Principle

As the conveyor belt moves over the wing pulley, contact occurs only along the edges of the wings rather than a continuous surface. This reduces the contact area and allows excess material to fall through the gaps due to gravity and belt movement. As a result, the pulley remains clean, minimizing imbalance, vibration, and belt misalignment.
