Company Profile

AstraRoll is a professional expander roller manufacturer based in China, specializing in the design, development, precision machining, and advanced surface treatment of web handling rollers for the global converting industry. For over a decade, AstraRoll has focused its production resources on this core product category — the expander roller, widely known in the market as the bow roller, banana roller, spreader roller, or wrinkle remover roller. Our factory covers over 8,000 square meters and houses complete CNC machining workshops, dynamic balancing stations, rubber coating production lines, and aluminum slat assembly workshops. AstraRoll supplies hundreds of rollers annually to clients across Europe, the Americas, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, earning consistent recognition for stable quality and responsive technical service.

What Is an Expander Roller?

An expander roller is a curved, bowed, or segmented roller engineered to spread a continuously moving web, such as plastic film, paper, metal foil, textile fabric, or nonwoven material, outward from the web center toward both edges. Its core function is eliminating wrinkles, baggy edges and uneven web slack before the web enters key processing stations. Unlike conventional straight rollers that merely support web transportation without adjusting tension distribution, the expander roller actively redistributes tension across the full web width, improves surface flatness, and maintains a smooth and stable web path under continuous high-speed operation.

The term “expander” directly describes its core capability: expanding the web laterally. This makes the expander roller an indispensable component for slitting, laminating, coating, printing, rewinding, unwinding and web inspection machines. In these production lines, flat web quality is the decisive factor of finished product yield, so a reliable expander roller is critical to reduce waste and boost line efficiency.

How It Works – Operating Principle

Bow Roller Principle

A fixed bow expander roller adopts a curved axle fitted with multiple bearing-mounted rotating rings. When the web runs over the bowed roller surface, the web follows a shorter path at the roller center and a longer path toward both edges, creating a controlled tension gradient. This tension gradient pushes the web outward to achieve full-width flattening. The spreading effect is determined by the bow height, web wrap angle and roller outer diameter. Fixed bow rollers cannot adjust curvature during operation.

Slat Expander Principle

An aluminum slat expander roller features a straight main axle assembled with a series of parallel aluminum slats arranged around a variable contour profile. Operators can adjust the slat segments to create the required spreading profile. This design delivers reliable spreading performance even under low web tension, so AstraRoll recommends this style for ultra-thin, easily damaged or low-tension webs including biaxially oriented films and lithium battery foils.

Adjustable Bow

The adjustable bow expander roller allows operators to modify bow height either online or during machine shutdown to fine-tune spreading force for different raw materials, web widths and line speeds. This design is perfect for flexible production workshops where multiple grades of film or paper run on the same production line.

Product Types

AstraRoll manufactures three main expander roller configurations to match diverse industrial working conditions.

1. Fixed Bow Expander Roller

This model features fixed crown without adjustable mechanisms. It suits dedicated high-volume production lines with stable raw material specifications. The structure is simple, requires minimal routine maintenance and delivers a long service life.

2. Adjustable Bow Expander Roller

Equipped with manual or motorized bow adjustment structure, this roller supports fine tuning of spreading effect. It is widely adopted in multi-grade converting production lines with frequent material switching.

3. Aluminum Slat Expander Roller

Built with a straight shaft and segmented aluminum slats, this roller achieves low-tension gentle spreading for thin and delicate webs. It is lightweight with low rotational inertia, showing excellent performance for high-speed web processing.

Surface & Material Options

AstraRoll supplies a full range of roller surface treatments and raw materials to satisfy physical and chemical requirements of various web substrates.

Rubber covered roller surface using NBR, EPDM, silicone or PU material provides strong friction and outstanding wrinkle removal performance for plastic film, coated paper and nonwoven fabric. The rubber hardness can be customized from 55 to 75 Shore A as requested. All rubber coverings are bonded tightly to prevent delamination under continuous operation.

Hard chrome plated steel roller surface delivers superior wear resistance and ultra-smooth finish, suitable for high-speed production and abrasive web materials.

Stainless steel versions in SS304 or SS316 grade offer reliable corrosion resistance for wet working environments, chemical contact scenarios and food-grade processing lines.

Aluminum alloy slat construction provides lightweight roller bodies for low-inertia and low-tension applications. We also provide optional textured or knurled surface patterns. These patterns increase web gripping force without scratching sensitive coated surfaces.

Technical Specifications

All expander rollers from AstraRoll are fully customized according to client drawings and technical requirements. Our common production parameter range covers roller diameter from 50 mm to 350 mm, working width up to 8,000 mm, and overall roller length up to 8,500 mm. The bow height can be manufactured from 0 mm to 25 mm. The rubber covering hardness ranges from 55 to 75 Shore A, and the rollers can adapt to maximum line speed up to 600 m/min.

For shaft material, AstraRoll provides carbon steel, SS304 and SS316 selections. Bearing configurations include ball bearings, needle bearings and self-aligning bearings to fit different load and speed demands. Available surface treatment options include rubber coating, hard chrome plating, aluminum slat assembly and plain metal finish.

AstraRoll controls tight dimensional tolerance within ±0.05 mm on critical diameter dimensions. Every finished roller undergoes static and dynamic balancing testing, and we can issue official inspection reports to guarantee low vibration even under maximum rated operating speed.

Manufacturing Process & Quality Control

AstraRoll implements a complete and traceable production workflow to guarantee consistent and reliable roller quality.

The first step is design and drawing review. Our professional engineers verify bow curve, bearing layout and material selection based on client machine parameters and web processing requirements. After drawing confirmation, shaft, hub and ring components are precisely machined on CNC lathes and milling centers.

Next comes rubber covering and curing. AstraRoll formulates rubber compounds in-house and cures rubber tightly onto the roller body, ensuring strong bonding strength and uniform hardness across the whole roller surface. After surface processing, each roller enters dynamic balancing testing on precision balancing equipment, complying with ISO 1940 G2.5 standard or higher. Clients can request a full balancing report with delivery.

Then we carry out comprehensive dimensional inspection. Our QC team checks roller diameter, roundness, runout and bow height, comparing all measured data against approved technical drawings. After cleaning and surface protection, finished rollers are wrapped and packed in heavy-duty wooden crates for sea freight or air transportation.

AstraRoll’s production system follows ISO 9001 certification. All raw materials can be traced through heat numbers and material test certificates.

Applications & Industries

Expander rollers manufactured by AstraRoll are installed in converting and processing facilities across many industries.

For flexible packaging and film converting, our rollers serve BOPP, PET, CPP, PVC film, shrink film and metalized film slitting and rewinding lines. In paper and tissue industries, AstraRoll expander rollers remove wrinkles and spread web for tissue paper, release paper and coated paper production.

For textile and nonwoven sectors, our products are widely used in fabric dyeing, fabric finishing and nonwoven web spreading processes. In printing and lamination fields, they work perfectly with gravure printing, flexo printing, coating and lamination production lines.

In battery and electronics industries, AstraRoll supplies low-tension expander rollers for lithium copper foil, aluminum foil and electrode web handling. We also provide solutions for foam, artificial leather and other low-modulus webs requiring gentle lateral spreading.
