A: If your conveyor operates in a clean, dry environment with light to medium loads, a bare carbon steel drum (machined with a slight crown for belt tracking) is sufficient. If you are operating in wet, dusty, or oily conditions, or pulling massive bulk loads, you must select our Rubber Coated (lagged) option to increase the coefficient of friction and prevent the belt from slipping.

Q: Will the internal motor overheat during continuous 24/7 operation?
A: No. Our drum motors are specifically engineered for continuous duty (S1). The internal synthetic oil bath acts as a highly efficient coolant. It transfers the heat from the motor stator directly to the carbon steel shell. As your conveyor belt wraps around the cold steel shell, it acts like a massive radiator, continuously drawing the heat away from the motor.

Q: Can I use this carbon steel drum motor in a food processing plant?
A: For general packaging of sealed foods (boxes, cartons), carbon steel is perfectly fine. However, if the roller will be exposed to raw food (meat, dairy, produce) or subjected to daily chemical washdowns, carbon steel will rust.
