Product Overview:

Driving heavy bulk material conveyors—such as those used in mining, power plants, and steel mills—places immense strain on the electric motor. When running 24/7 under multi-ton loads, internal heat builds up rapidly. Standard air-cooled motors or dry-run drum motors will quickly suffer from thermal degradation, leading to burned stator windings and catastrophic line failure. Prevent motor overheating and thermal shutdowns. Source AstraRoll's oil-cooled drum motors for superior heat dissipation, high torque, and continuous heavy-duty operation. By completely submerging the internal AC motor and heavy-duty planetary gears in a premium synthetic oil bath, our Custom Heavy-Duty Conveyor Drives actively transfer extreme internal heat directly to the outer steel shell, where the moving conveyor belt safely dissipates it. Delivering massive torque in a compact, self-contained, and perfectly sealed unit, AstraRoll Industrial Oil-Cooled Drum Motors are the ultimate solution for unstoppable bulk material handling.

Roll Function: Conveyor Roller, Material Handling

Industrial Oil-Cooled Drum Motors for Heavy-Duty Conveyor Systems Details

The AstraRoll Technical Advantage

Engineering a heavy-duty motorized pulley requires uncompromising thermal management and torque capacity:

Superior Oil-Cooled Heat Dissipation: The internal oil bath acts as a highly efficient liquid coolant. It continuously circulates around the motor stator and gears, absorbing heat and transferring it to the rotating steel drum. This allows the motor to operate at peak loads continuously without triggering thermal overload switches.

Hermetic Sealing & Protection: Mining and heavy industrial environments are filled with abrasive dust and moisture. AstraRoll drum motors are hermetically sealed (IP66/IP67), ensuring the internal oil stays in and abrasive contaminants stay out, virtually eliminating the risk of gear failure.

High-Torque Planetary Gearing: To start a fully loaded aggregate conveyor from a dead stop, immense starting torque is required. We utilize precision-machined, hardened alloy steel planetary gears that distribute the load across multiple gear teeth, preventing stripping and ensuring smooth, high-torque power transmission.

Space-Saving Safety: By integrating the entire drive system inside the roller, you eliminate bulky external motors, hazardous chain drives, and exposed sprockets. This saves critical walkway space in cramped industrial plants and drastically improves worker safety.

Primary Applications

AstraRoll Industrial Oil-Cooled Drum Motors are engineered for the world's most demanding continuous-duty applications:

  • Mining & Quarrying: Driving massive rubber belts conveying crushed rock, iron ore, and gravel over long distances.
  • Power Generation: Powering coal-handling conveyors and ash-removal systems in extreme-temperature environments.
  • Cement & Steel Mills: Transporting raw limestone, clinker, and heavy metal scrap.
  • Heavy Pallet Logistics: Driving heavy-duty roller chains and belts in automotive assembly and heavy machinery warehouses.

Why Choose AstraRoll?

1. Explosion-Proof Certification Capabilities

For underground coal mining, grain silos, or chemical plants where combustible dust and gases are present, standard motors pose a severe ignition risk. AstraRoll can engineer our oil-cooled drum motors with specialized flame-proof enclosures and strict ATEX / Ex d certifications, ensuring absolute safety in volatile industrial environments.

2. Factory-Vulcanized Heavy Lagging

An oil-cooled motor generates massive torque, which is useless if the steel drum slips against the belt. AstraRoll provides in-house hot-vulcanized rubber lagging. We can apply up to 20mm of ultra-durable NBR rubber or Ceramic-embedded lagging, complete with deep diamond grooving to channel away mud and water, guaranteeing 100% torque transfer in the harshest conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Do I need to perform maintenance or change the oil inside the drum motor?
A:
Yes. Unlike fractional-horsepower lightweight drum motors that are "sealed for life" with grease, heavy-duty oil-cooled drum motors require periodic oil changes. AstraRoll designs these motors with easily accessible oil fill and drain plugs on the end housings. The first oil change is typically required after 500 hours of break-in operation, and subsequently every 10,000 operational hours (or as recommended based on your load conditions).

Q: Can I test-run the oil-cooled drum motor on the floor without a conveyor belt attached?
A:
No, absolutely not for prolonged periods. The motor relies on the conveyor belt to act as a radiator. The internal oil transfers heat to the steel shell, and the moving belt pulls that heat away. Running the motor continuously without a belt wrapping around it will cause the oil to rapidly overheat, which can damage the internal stators and seals.

Q: Can this drum motor be controlled by a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)?
A:
Yes. The three-phase AC induction motors housed inside our oil-cooled drums are fully compatible with VFDs, allowing you to seamlessly control acceleration, deceleration, and running speeds of your heavy-duty conveyor line.
