Product Overview:

In flexographic printing, the quality of the final image—specifically precise dot gain control and uniform color density—relies entirely on the interaction between the anilox cylinder, the printing plate, and the rubber rollers. The rubber fountain and impression rollers operate in a brutal chemical environment, subjected to harsh solvents, aggressive UV monomers, and high-friction nip pressures. Standard commercial rubbers quickly absorb these chemicals, causing the roller to swell, soften, and lose its geometric trueness, which instantly destroys print registration. The AstraRoll Precision Flexo Printing Roller is engineered specifically for these complex chemical environments. By custom-compounding high-purity NBR and EPDM elastomers, we provide total chemical immunity to your specific ink systems. Vulcanized to rigid metal or carbon fiber cores and CNC-ground to exact OEM micron tolerances, our flexo rollers guarantee stable nip pressure, zero swelling, and flawless high-definition ink transfer over millions of impressions.

The AstraRoll Technical Advantage

We engineer our flexo elastomers to master the strict chemical and mechanical demands of modern printing presses:

Ink-Specific Chemical Immunity: Using the wrong rubber will ruin a print run in hours. We formulate dedicated NBR compounds that are impervious to harsh flexo solvents (like ethyl acetate), and dedicated EPDM compounds that resist the aggressive swelling caused by UV-cured inks and washes.

Dynamic Compression Recovery: The impression roller compresses against the printing plate thousands of times per minute. Our premium elastomers boast an exceptionally low compression set, meaning the rubber instantly bounces back to its perfect cylindrical shape, preventing the "flattening" that causes uneven print pressure.

Micro-Precision Concentricity: A variance of just 0.05mm will cause banding or "gear marks" on your printed packaging. We utilize advanced CNC cylindrical grinders to finish the rubber surface to a strict Total Indicator Runout (TIR) of ≤ 0.02mm, ensuring perfectly uniform ink metering.

Anti-Static (ESD) Formulations: High-speed flexo printing on plastic films generates massive static charges, which attract dust and create a fire hazard with solvent inks. AstraRoll blends semi-conductive additives into the rubber to safely ground these electrical charges to the press frame.

Key Specifications

Please note: We manufacture the core and compound the elastomer entirely to your specific press OEM dimensions.

Face Length: Custom manufactured from narrow web (300mm) up to wide web (3,000mm+).
Hardness Tolerance: ± 3 Shore A (Maintained precisely across the entire face length).
Operating Temperature: Engineered to remain stable up to 120°C (248°F) depending on compound.
TIR (Total Indicator Runout): ≤ 0.02mm.

Why Choose AstraRoll?

1. Dual-System Mixed Ink Capabilities

Many modern packaging printers switch between water-based inks (for food-safe printing) and UV inks (for high-gloss labels) on the exact same press. AstraRoll formulates specialty hybrid elastomer blends that can safely handle both water-based and UV chemistries, eliminating the need to swap out heavy rollers during job changeovers.

2. Factory-Direct Re-Vulcanization

Flexo rollers are the ultimate consumables. When your fountain or impression rollers eventually glaze over, harden, or get slashed by a runaway doctor blade, do not scrap the expensive metal shafts. Ship them to the AstraRoll factory. We will chemically strip the damaged rubber, apply a brand-new layer of vulcanized elastomer, and CNC grind it back to OEM tolerances for a fraction of the cost of new equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: I am switching my press from solvent-based inks to UV-cured inks. Can I use my existing rubber rollers?
A: No, doing so will destroy the rollers. Solvent-based presses use NBR (Nitrile) rollers. If you expose NBR to UV inks and UV washes, the rubber will swell rapidly, soften, and begin to melt. For UV inks, you must upgrade your rollers to EPDM rubber, which is chemically resistant to UV monomers but will conversely be destroyed by petroleum solvents.

Q: What Shore hardness do you recommend for an impression roller printing on corrugated cardboard?
A: Corrugated cardboard is highly textured and compressible. To achieve a clean print without crushing the "flutes" inside the cardboard, we recommend a slightly softer impression roller, typically around 35 to 50 Shore A. For printing on hard, smooth plastic films, a firmer roller (70 to 80 Shore A) is required for crisp dot reproduction.

Q: Why does my flexo fountain roller keep getting "glazy" and losing its ability to transfer ink?
A: "Glazing" occurs when ink pigments, paper dust, and cleaning chemicals build up and harden in the microscopic pores of the rubber. Using the wrong cleaning solvent accelerates this. Routine deep cleaning with a dedicated rubber rejuvenator is required. If the glaze has permanently hardened the rubber, AstraRoll can simply re-grind the top millimeter of the surface to expose fresh, porous rubber and restore transfer capabilities.
