When rewinding multiple narrow strips of film, foil, or paper onto a single rewind shaft, microscopic variations in the material's thickness (gauge variation) create a massive mechanical problem. Because thicker sections build up in diameter faster, they wind tighter and pull the web with extreme tension, eventually snapping the material. Meanwhile, the thinner sections remain loose, sagging and creating defective, spongy rolls. A standard solid air shaft cannot compensate for this because it locks all cores at the same rotational speed. Instead of a solid expanding surface, our shaft features multiple independent "friction rings."
