Product Overview:

When rewinding multiple narrow strips of film, foil, or paper onto a single rewind shaft, microscopic variations in the material's thickness (gauge variation) create a massive mechanical problem. Because thicker sections build up in diameter faster, they wind tighter and pull the web with extreme tension, eventually snapping the material. Meanwhile, the thinner sections remain loose, sagging and creating defective, spongy rolls. A standard solid air shaft cannot compensate for this because it locks all cores at the same rotational speed. The AstraRoll Custom Differential Shaft (also known as a Slip Shaft or Friction Shaft) is the ultimate solution. Instead of a solid expanding surface, our shaft features multiple independent "friction rings." By regulating the internal air pressure, the central bladder presses against these rings with a specific friction force. If a roll winds too tight, the individual ring simply slips (rotates slightly slower than the base shaft), absorbing the excess tension. This guarantees that every single slit roll—regardless of material thickness variations—rewinds with absolute, independent, and perfect tension.

Custom Differential Shafts for Precision Tension Control in Slitting Details

The AstraRoll Technical Advantage

We engineer our differential shafts to provide microscopic tension control for the most sensitive slitting applications:

Independent Slip Action: Each friction ring operates autonomously. By continuously slipping at controlled rates, the shaft compensates for varying web profiles and varying roll diameters across the entire web width simultaneously.

Precise Pneumatic Tension Control: The friction force (torque) is directly proportional to the air pressure supplied to the shaft. By pairing our shaft with an automated proportional valve, the machine can gradually reduce tension as the roll diameter grows (taper tension), preventing roll telescoping and crushed cores.

Modular "Quick-Change" Rings: Friction elements eventually wear out. AstraRoll slip rings are highly modular. If a ring gets damaged, your operators can quickly slide it off and replace it without needing to scrap the expensive base shaft, drastically reducing maintenance downtime.

High-Precision Concentricity: At slitting speeds exceeding 400 m/min, shaft vibration will ruin the roll edges. We CNC-grind our core shafts and precisely balance the entire differential assembly to ensure flawless, vibration-free high-speed rewinding.

Why Choose AstraRoll?

1. Tailored Friction Elements

Slitting lithium battery foil requires completely different friction coefficients than slitting heavy kraft paper. AstraRoll engineers calculate your specific web tension requirements and equip the slip rings with the precise friction medium—be it wool felt, polyurethane strips, or high-carbon steel balls—to guarantee smooth, non-jerky slip action without generating excessive heat.

2. Factory-Direct Pricing for Machine Builders

Upgrading a slitter to differential winding is often the most expensive component of the machine. By purchasing directly from AstraRoll, slitter manufacturers (OEMs) and converting facilities avoid heavy distributor markups while receiving guaranteed ISO-certified dimensional tolerances that mate perfectly to your existing machine chucks.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How do I choose the correct slip ring width for my application?
A:
The slip ring width must be equal to or slightly smaller than your minimum slit width. For example, if the narrowest roll you plan to slit is 25mm wide, you should select 20mm or 25mm slip rings. This ensures that every individual cardboard core sits on its own independent ring for proper tension control.

Q: Can a differential shaft be used on the unwind (payoff) station?
A:
No. Differential shafts are engineered exclusively for the rewind station where multiple individual cores are being wound simultaneously. For the unwind station—where you are supporting a single, large master roll—you should use a standard heavy-duty Lug or Leaf-type Air Shaft.

Q: How is the air pressure supplied to the shaft while it is spinning?
A:
The shaft is typically connected to the machine's pneumatic system via a rotary joint (rotary union) mounted on the end of the shaft journals. This allows the machine's PLC and proportional valves to continuously feed and adjust air pressure to the internal bladder while the shaft is rotating at high speeds.
