In the SM74 Alcolor dampening architecture, the Z roller acts as a critical bridge between the inking unit and the dampening system. When engaged, it pre-inks the dampening form roller before water is applied, stabilizing the ink-water emulsion and preventing startup scumming. It is designed to be automatically disengaged by the press mechanism when operating in Vario mode.
