Custom differential slip air shaft

Product Overview:
AstraRoll air differential shafts are designed for slitting and rewinding lines where multiple rolls are wound on the same shaft. Each slip ring or friction ring can slip independently, allowing every strip to maintain its own tension as roll diameter grows. This helps prevent loose rolls, telescoping, edge stagger, and material breakage caused by uneven thickness or width across the web.
The shaft is built to customer drawings and matched to the machine interface, core size, web width, and tension range.
Roll Function: Printing Roller

Custom differential slip air shaft Details
When a slitting line rewinds several strips on one shaft, small differences in material thickness or strip width can quickly turn into loose rolls, telescoping, or broken web. AstraRoll's air differential shaft addresses this by giving each roll its own slip point. Instead of one fixed grip across the full width, the shaft carries individual friction rings that can slip independently under air pressure, so every strip keeps its own tension as the roll diameter grows. The result is cleaner roll edges, fewer changeover problems, and more consistent rewinding across the full web. Each shaft is machined to the customer’s drawing and matched to the core size, web width, ring layout, and machine interface, with compatible slip rings supplied as part of the same system.
Working Principle
The main shaft rotates at a constant speed, setting the web line speed. Each slip ring carries one roll. When a roll grows faster in diameter - due to slightly thicker material or a narrower strip - its pulling force increases. Once that force exceeds the set torque, the slip ring slips and rotates slower than the main shaft, matching the incoming web speed. Normal rolls continue rotating with the shaft.
Result: different roll RPM, same web line speed, all rolls finish together without breakage or wrinkling.
Key Features
- Independent tension per roll - each slip ring adjusts its own slip torque
- Air pressure controlled - tension setting via air pressure for repeatable operation
- Fast roll loading and unloading - deflate to release, inflate to grip
- Suitable for multi-roll slitting - film, foil, paper, label stock, nonwoven, and similar webs
- Custom-built - shaft length, core inner diameter, ring quantity, spacing, and journal interface to customer drawing
- Matched slip rings available - keyed, ball, or roller type depending on material and core
Slip Ring Options
| Slip Ring Type | Grip Method | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Keyed slip ring | Surface contact via retractable keys | Thick material, high tension, paper cores |
| Ball slip ring | Point contact via small steel balls | Narrow slitting, frequent loading, slightly deformed cores |
| Roller slip ring | Line contact + point contact | Thin film, tension-sensitive webs, plastic or aluminum cores |
Typical Applications
- Label stock slitting and rewinding
- BOPP, PET, PE, CPP film slitting
- Protective film and optical film
- Copper foil and aluminum foil slitting
- Lithium battery separator film
- Paper and adhesive tape converting
- Printing, coating, and laminating lines with multi-roll rewinding
