Key Bar Air Differential Slip Shaft

Product Overview:
This AstraRoll key bar aluminum air differential slip shaft is engineered for slitter rewinders in flexible web converting. Pneumatic inflation extends key bars to lock paper cores firmly. Independent slip rings create controlled slip, delivering uniform tension for every rewound strip. Ideal for film, foil, label stock and paper, it prevents wrinkling, stretching and uneven rolls. With high straightness and stable friction, we offer reliable OEM custom sizing to fit your converting equipment perfectly.

Key Bar Air Differential Slip Shaft Details
AstraRoll Key-Bar Aluminum Air Differential Shaft (Slip Shaft)
Engineered for Precision Multi-Strip Slitting and Rewinding
1. Product Overview
The AstraRoll Key-Bar Aluminum Air Differential Shaft, also widely known in the converting industry as a Differential Slip Shaft or Slip Shaft, is a specialized winding core component designed for slitting and rewinding machinery that processes multiple narrow web strips simultaneously.
Unlike a standard air expanding shaft, which locks every paper core to rotate in perfect synchronization with the main spindle, the differential air shaft integrates a series of independent friction slip-ring units along the shaft body. Each slip ring grips its own paper tube and is capable of controlled relative slipping against the spindle. This design enables every rewound roll to maintain its own optimum tension, regardless of how individual roll diameters grow at different rates during production.
As a key member of the AstraRoll portfolio for material handling and web converting components, this shaft is built for OEM equipment manufacturers and end-user converters who demand consistent finished-roll quality, minimal material waste, and reliable long-term performance.
2. How It Works
The differential slip shaft combines two distinct functions in one assembly:Key Bar Air Differential Slip Shaft
- Pneumatic inflation and locking: Compressed air is fed through the shaft end into an internal air bladder. As pressure rises (standard working range 0.6–0.8 MPa), the bladder expands and forces the external key bars to rise uniformly, gripping the paper tube core firmly. The tube is then driven by the shaft. When air is released, the key bars retract via internal springs, allowing quick and tool-free core replacement.
- Independent slip (differential) function: The main spindle rotates at a constant speed driven by the machine. Each slip-ring unit, however, contains its own friction control element. The friction torque of each slip ring is pre-set, and fine-tuned by adjusting the overall working air pressure or friction shims according to production demands. When a given roll's diameter increases and its linear web speed tends to accelerate, the corresponding slip ring performs controlled slipping. This compensates for diameter differences and keeps web tension uniform across all strips, preventing over-tension, material stretch, web wrinkling, telescoping, and uneven roll edges.
3. Construction and Materials
- Shaft body: High-strength aluminum alloy, lightweight with high straightness and rigidity, resistant to corrosion and suitable for high-speed operation.
- Key bars: Precision-machined steel key bars seated along the shaft surface; they provide strong, even gripping force on the paper core.
- Slip-ring units: Independently adjustable friction assemblies, each tailored to deliver stable, repeatable torque.
- Air system: Durable internal bladder and rotary air coupling designed for extended service life and minimal leakage.
- Surface treatment: Hard anodizing or other anti-wear coatings available per application requirement.

5. Key Features and Advantages
✅ Independent tension control per roll — each slip ring adjusts individually, ideal for multi-strip narrow-web slitting.
✅ Uniform finished-roll quality — reduces stretching, wrinkling, and telescoping; produces clean, even roll edges.
✅ Tension tunable via air pressure or friction shim adjustment — operators fine-tune web tension conveniently without full disassembly.
✅ Lightweight aluminum body — lower inertia, faster acceleration, reduced load on machine drive.
✅ Strong key-bar gripping — secure core locking, no slippage between shaft and paper tube.
✅ Fast roll change — quick inflation/deflation cycle shortens downtime.
✅ Durable construction — corrosion-resistant, low maintenance, long service life.
✅ Fully customizable — length, diameter, slip-ring quantity, and core size made to your drawing.
6. Applications
The AstraRoll differential air shaft is widely used in the processing of:
- Flexible packaging films — BOPP, PET, CPP, PE, nylon
